RICHIE LOOP: A TRIPLE THREAT
By: Pojanee Fleury, Publisher
Richie Loop is described as a multi-talented phenomenon. He is what you call a triple threat: he is a singer, songwriter and an extremely talented producer. Little known, he is behind popular Reggae riddims such as ‘Brainstorm,’ ‘Maad A Road,’ and ‘Sweat Shop.’ Richie Loop is also the voice behind the popular party anthem ‘My Cupp.’ The single and video found its way to the top of several reggae and dancehall charts locally in Jamaica and internationally. The young star has accomplished so much and still has a lot to give. His advice to upcoming artists is to pray hard and work smart, he knows the business of music is not easy but with faith and a strong will, its rewards are immeasurable. |
Born in Kingston and raised in the parish of Clarendon, Richie Loop began his career after college, at Gumption Recording Studios as a composer. He then spent five months at Gal A Rush Recording Studios fine tuning his craft. During that time, he worked with veteran reggae artist Derrick Morgan. While working with Derrick Morgan, Richie Loop got his first big break. He was approached and offered a contract by Robert Livingston, CEO of Scikron Entertainment/Big Yard Music Label. The experience working with Livingston was a time of critical learning in his career, he explains: “In my daily musical walk, I am able to learn from one of the greatest manager/producer of all time and continue the legacy of Scikron Entertainment. My main focus is to work on improving my skills by incorporating new styles of beats (a fusion of dancehall, disco, rock and hip hop) and songs that people will enjoy.”
He has worked with artists such as Shaggy, Busy Signal, Christopher Martin, Ce'cile, Voicemail, Red Fox, Lukie D, Tony Matterhorn, D-Major, D-Lynx, Iceman, and upcoming female dancehall artist Rae Tay. With new hot tracks, he is ready to take over of the charts once again.
Tell us about the new, hot remix "2Nite"
RL: "2Nite" is a remix I did of Trey Songz song "Touchin Lovin" (ft Nicki Minaj). I just got the vibes from Avalanche Sound, and DJ Barkardi said it would be a good idea to make a Jamaican version of the song. So I did it and it turned out to be quite a remix. Nuff respect to Trey Songz and Nicki, as well as my team.

Who are some artists (or others in the industry) you want to collab or work with?
RL: Well I’m a vibrant and entertaining artiste/producer and I just wanna make good music and hit records. I want to work with majors and minors. I really would love to work with Lil’ Wayne, Ludacris, Big Sean, Sean Paul, Chronixx, Shaggy, Busy Signal and a few others. Your song "My Cupp" became very popular, how did you come up with the concept? RL: The concept came from me watching an interview with Lil’ Wayne and the cup vibe came into reality from that moment. What type of elements do you put into your music that makes it exciting and unique? RL: Well, I like to mix and match and create from scratch. So I mix as many genres as I can to create a sound or the sound that I’m looking for or the market I’m trying to target. What artists and/or producers influenced you? RL: Artists like Beenie Man, again Lil’ Wayne, Chris Brown, Bob Marley, Michael Jackson, R Kelly, and Usher to name a few.. |
You are an accomplished producer, songwriter, and singer is there anything else in the industry you want to do?
RL: I would love to work hard enough and get a shot at winning a Grammy cause from I came on this business I told myself, I am not complete unless I get myself a Grammy.
Did you always want to be an artist and produce music?
RL: I always loved music; I never knew I would become an artist. I always loved to dance. The artistry came from me trying to contact other artist as a young producer to sing or rap on my beats. It became a task so I just started to sing on my own beats.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
RL: I don't know what the future holds. I’m taking it one day at a time, the Almighty will bless me and five years from now we do this interview again, if my life is spared.

What challenges have you faced in the industry? RL: Challenges are always in this business, I've faced DJs not wanted to play my songs, others hating, etc.- it's a faith testing industry. I have seen good days and bad days. And some challenges are harder than some. But I love music and I will treat her with the highest of respect in good times and in bad. What advice would you give to upcoming artists? RL: Pray hard and work smart. Think and read a lot about the business you want to come in, be different and remember nothing in life is easy; almost every artist has the same story "almost." What’s next for Richie Loop?
