Lupita Nyong’o Presents $10,000 Scholarships to Young Women of Color

Lupita Nyong’o is known for her impeccable acting in movies such as Us, 12 Years a Slave, and Blank Panther, but many may be unaware of her charitable, philanthropic actions. Recently, at the 113th annual NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) convention, she awarded a $10,000 scholarship to forty girls each in partnership with Lancôme, a beauty brand she is an ambassador of. The Write Her Future scholarship, which the women were finalists of, is sponsored by Lancôme and aims “to ensure equity in educational opportunity that prepares students for success in school, work, and life” for “...Black students and students of color, who identify as female, pursuing an undergraduate degree..” (NAACP).
The scholarships were awarded during the ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics) Ceremonies of the convention in July of this year, a national highschool program spanning throughout the year that encourages growth in various academic subjects. The scholarship opportunity was announced back in September of 2021 and girls who fell under the required criteria were encouraged to apply and if chosen, traveled to the convention in Atlantic City to receive it. Forty women now have received money in order to pursue their undergraduate degrees and achieve great success in their academics. The women have already been accepted to impressive universities such as Brown, Princeton, NYU, Stanford, Juilliard and many others.
Nyong’o not only presented the awards to the young women, but also shared her own thoughts on women’s equity in education: “Since I was a child, I have always had big dreams, and my education has played a huge part in helping me realize them...I've always loved learning and I believe that learners change the world. I am so thrilled to .. award this incredible group of women with these game-changing scholarships” (NAACP). Thanks to the generosity of Lancôme, in partnership with Nyong’o and the NAACP, many young women of color now have scholarships to further their education into undergraduate degrees.
