Making History for a 2nd Time: Zendaya’s Emmy Nominations
By Intern Blogger Lara Barg

Not one, not two, but three Emmy nominations were received by Zendaya on July 12th for the hit TV show Euphoria on HBO Max, which she is currently a lead actress and producer for. The show, described by HBO, is about “..a group of high school students as they navigate love and friendships in a world of drugs, sex, trauma and social media..” and is an American version of a hit Israeli show. Zendaya plays a teenage addict on the show named Rue, alongside other noteworthy actors such as Sydney Sweeney, Hunter Schafer, Maude Apatow, and Jacob Elordi.

Euphoria grabbed 16 Emmy nominations for the 2022 awards show, with Zendaya being nominated for “Lead Actress in a Drama Series” and “Outstanding Music and Original Lyrics” twice for “I’m Tired” and “Elliot’s Song”. Zendaya helped write and produced both songs with musical creator Labrinth to be performed on the show.

Euphoria’s own nomination in “Outstanding Drama Series” made Zendaya the youngest producer ever nominated at age 25. On her Instagram, Zendaya reacted to the recent nomination by saying “I don’t have the words to express the love and gratitude I feel right now, all I can do is say thank you with all my heart!

We out here Emmy nominated again y’all!!!” and thanking the other “creative collaborators” of the show. This isn’t the first time the young actress has made history at the Emmys. When winning in 2020 for “Lead Actress in a Drama Series”, Zendaya was the youngest woman to have won that award, making it her first Emmy win of her acting career. She was also the second black woman to win this award, with Viola Davis being the first (Variety).

Being an executive producer for a show is something familiar to Zendaya: similarly to Euphoria, she has produced and been a lead actress in “Malcolm & Marie” as well as “K.C. Undercover”. Zendaya has acted in other work such as being “MJ” in the recent Spiderman trilogy, The Greatest Showman, Dune, and other notable films and TV shows. She’s also well known for her time on Disney Channel being in TV shows such as “Shake It Up”. From Disney Channel to Marvel to HBO Max, Zendaya is just beginning making her mark as an actress and producer at the young age of 25.
