THREE THINGS YOU DON’T PAY ATTENTION TOO – THEY ARE DESTROYING YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

It is often said that health is wealth. Typically, being healthy transcends being physically fit or active to perform our daily activities; good health also involves mental and social well-being.

Mental wellness is a topic that is barely attended to. Regrettably so, as it causes nearly a million deaths yearly across the world – according to a WHO research in 2014, about 800,000 people die annually from suicide, mainly due to depression.

When a person is physically ill, diagnosed with cancer, or a stroke, it is usually apparent because they cannot carry out their usual tasks. They become weak, and hence they get help – even without asking.

However, mental unwellness cannot be diagnosed from an eye-test; therefore, we must make a more conscious effort to recognize signs within ourselves and others.

Many times people do not know that they are sick because they aren’t symptomatic. Hence, they do not seek medical attention. A person infected with HIV may not show symptoms for years, so they may not seek medical help, even though they are dying inside. In the same vein, many people have mental ailments, and they fail to realize this. There is a lack of general knowledge of mental health illness and how they manifest - even asymptotically. For example, feelings of forcing oneself to feel happy.

Here are three factors that subtly contribute to poor mental wellness.

LACK OF OFFLINE RELATIONSHIPS
In the 21st century, everything seems to be advanced, and nearly all processes can be automated. However, humans are not computers. It is crucial to have a healthy balance between social media and the real world. The essence of keeping strong connections with family and close friends cannot be overestimated because they can understand situations that you are going through and can offer practical solutions even as small as being a listening ear.

Having a few friends online is good, but having real relationships offline matters. Make a few phone calls rather than the regular text, entertain [safe] visits, and do not enjoy your own company excessively as this is a recipe for overthinking and depression.

EXCESSIVE BROODING
You may have experienced failure at school, work, or you may feel like you have failed in holding your family together. However, you must make a conscious effort to see things from another perspective.

You must decide to view the glass as half-full rather than half-empty. In short, you must celebrate your wins, this will put you on a pedestal for even bigger wins, and your depressing results will be blotted out.

POOR COMMUNICATION
Many people encounter several challenges in life, but they keep it all to themselves for many different reasons. At times, people get offended by the actions of friends and relatives. Communication is vital to fostering excellent interpersonal relationships with people and freeing your mind of debris emanating from diverse burdens. Good communication removes the potential of conflict and brings about peace. When there is tranquility, depression and mental breakdowns stay far away.

The most popular reasons for poor mental health and depression are addiction, grief, poor grades at school, poor finances, and the likes. However, these psychological aspects of our life must also be looked into so that we don’t unconsciously sink into the abyss of poor mental health.

Remember that these factors are “asymptomatic,” so they may not physically tell on you, but there’s a massive battle within you. Hence, overcome yourself from within, celebrate your little wins, establish good communication with people, and live a happier healthier life!

The newly inaugurated president of the United States – Joseph Biden, celebrated his 78th birthday in November 2020, making him the oldest person to gain control of the White House.

It is said that the finest of wines taste better with age, and Biden may be a perfect representation of that. Despite being the most recent Commander of the U.S. Armed Forces, he boasts of enormous achievements that qualify him perfectly for the job; at the same time, he has shown a great deal of appeal to the youth, exhibiting a fine blend of experience and youthfulness at heart.

As a left-leaning politician, he has been vocal about his policies that appeal greatly to the younger generation - despite being born in the silent generation. He has shown concerns regarding climate change and the activities of Americans towards global warming. He is a major proponent of the “Green New Deal,” a popular idea amongst Generation Z and the Millennials, who have long advocated for the widespread promotion of renewable energy that will not further deplete the ozone layer.

He is also a proponent of free college education for all, aiming to forgive students’ loan debt and allow the Millennials to lead a debt-free life.

By channeling this blend of youthful ideas into his vision for America,   Biden – a man from the silent generation - has become popular amongst the younger generation, amassing a huge number of votes from the younger generation compared to Trump.

65 percent of Generation Z voted for Biden compared to Trump’s 31 percent; this shows Biden’s influence on America’s younger citizens.

Despite breaking Reagan’s record to be the oldest person ever to hold a presidential office in the United States, Biden has shown that age is just a number, and he can connect with the younger populace on a fair level.

Biden’s hearty policies that make him well aligned with the youth, do not make him naïve or inexperienced in thinking. Quite the contrary, he has been an active member in the United States political scene for about 50 years, sponsoring 42 enacted bills during a healthy 36-year stint in the U.S. Senate, chairing the Senate Judiciary Committee, and representing the country’s best interests in foreign matters.

As the vice-president, he kept handling the country’s diplomatic issues, among other economic and citizen welfare responsibilities. In truth, Biden is the oldest ever to grace the seat; however, he also boasts of fresh ideas, which are appealing to the 21st century, while having a bank of experience to actualize these policies.

He is old, yet he is new.

“I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon!” Oprah Winfrey declared on January 7, 2018, at the Golden Globe Awards. She was accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award, a life achievement honor presented annually to the recipient who has made “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment,” but her powerful speech about sexual abuse led many viewers to speculate that she would run against Donald Trump for President in 2020. Might the Democratic Party bring forward its own celebrity for The Republic’s highest executive office?
Although Oprah will not be fulfilling this popular wish, Steve Bannon, who formerly served as the alt-right Breitbart News’ executive chairman and the Trump administration’s White House Chief Strategist, described her on July 18 as Trump’s biggest potential foe in the 2020 presidential election. (It’s ironic that, in a 1999 interview with Larry King, Trump named Oprah as his “first choice” for a running mate should he ever run for President.)

“I think we’re in a different era,” Bannon said. “I think we’re in an era that media and understanding media and understanding how to communicate on a mass basis to the American people is so much more important than being in a state legislat[ure].”

Each the other’s foil, Trump and media mogul Oprah, according to Vox staff writer Constance Grady, symbolize “two poles of the fantasy of the celebrity president, one of America’s favorite daydreams.” Trump evokes “rage and resentment,” Oprah “wisdom and kindness and empathy.” Whereas he is “the product of intergenerational failsonry [sic] & legitimately rich,” she is “black, a woman, unabashed, loved, genuinely self-made” — “the anti-Trump,” tweeted Talking Points Memo founder Josh Marshall. Whereas Trump personifies “the reality–tinged understanding of the American dream” that it’s “not actual hard work that makes you successful, but the ability to evince the feeling and effect of power and wealth,” BuzzFeed observed, Oprah has “made the American Dream seem increasingly attainable,” wrote author Nicole Aschoff. “When we fantasize about electing a celebrity for president,” Grady illuminates, “we’re not imagining that Oprah is secretly a brilliant legislator... We’re imagining that the perfect, untouchable, and morally righteous figure of our dreams can stride straight off the screen into the White House and make everything better” — that a celebrity savior can make America great again.
