Lil Nas X’s Snub, Doja Cat’s Predicted Big Wins, and Drake’s CLB Recognition - The latest on This Year’s Up-and-Coming BET Awards

This year’s Black Entertainment Television Awards, set to air June 26th, have announced their 2022 nominations, causing a whirl of emotions. Highlights of the nominees include Doja Cat for best female pop artist, The Weeknd for best male R&B artist, and some serious competition between female hip-hop artists Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Meg Thee Stallion, Saweetie, and Doja Cat. These women have been wildly successful this past year, contributing one hit song after the other.
As a fan of all six, I believe Doja Cat will win as she is also nominated for five other categories and has already begun taking home trophies. The Planet Her album absolutely blew up. “Need to Know” and “Woman” are widely used on TikTok, and her music video had over 3.7 million likes. She won top R&B artist at this year's Billboard awards, who called her album “one of the most successful pop LPs of the early '20s.”
Drake and Kanye compete for best male hip-hop artist along with Lil Baby, who previously won this category for the XXL awards. Drake should take home the prize as the most streamed artist of 2022. Drake’s album Certified Lover Boy is pure gold as far as good hype songs go, before a night out, or simply driving with friends. “Knife Talk” is the best hip-hop song on the album and even of this year, getting much well-deserved attention.
Along with BET’s exciting nominations, there is the shocking absence of Lil Nas X. BET excluded his October Billboard chart number one hit “Industry Baby” that reached 23+ million US streams last year. If you're disappointed in BET’s voting committee, you’re not alone. Lil Nas X publicly expressed his disappointment as NPR points out, even tweeting a snip of his track dissing the award show due to suspected homophobia.
Controversy aside, I am ecstatic to see The Weeknd being nominated for Best Male R&B artist. He has been my favorite artist for years and deserves all the recognition he can get for his artistry. I suspect he will win the award, since his album “Dawn FM” practically broke the internet this year, topping charts around the globe.
Considering all the great artists up for awards this year, get ready to tune in on June 26 to see who ends up taking home the infamous BET awards in each category.
