Tamar-kali

​Tamar-kali is an American rock singer-songwriter based in Brooklyn, New York. She embodies many different aspects of womanhood and artistry. “Kail” is the Hindu goddess of war and power, which speaks to Tamar’s unique brand of aggressive melodic rock. Her eclectic sound has landed her on variety of domestic and international stages including the 2016 SummerStage.

Collaborating with the Ase Dance Theatre Collective, they present excerpts from “Demon Fruit Blues,” an examination of womanhood; the performance invoked a plethora of emotions leaving the audience wanting more of the powerful piece. Tamar-kali is a rising powerhouse with a strong will and identity that will influence generations to come.

There is a reason why you won't get any great pictures of Saul Williams new stage show…

Earlier this year, Williams debuted his new album Martyr Loser King; seeing this album come to life on stage is a phenomenal audiovisual experience. I had the pleasure of being in the audience at his SummerStage performance, under a clear summer night sky at the Marcus Garvey park- coincidentally on Marcus Garvey's birthday and I was not prepared for what Saul was about to deliver. It seemed Williams wanted to give us (the audience) more than just his voice, unleashing a lyrical montage of his wordsmithery served on a platter of Afrobeat, Techno. Hip-Hop, Rock infused melodies. Williams’ words were now upfront and personal while Williams himself played the background.

Allan Harris is an award winning Jazz vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter from Harlem, New York. His new album Nobody's Gonna Love You Better (Black Bar Jukebox Redux) is his eleventh album, a follow up to the 2015 Black Bar Jukebox, which received high acclaims. According to the New York Times he is ​“a protean talent…” Harris has spent the past 20 years steadily honing a stellar reputation as one of the finest vocalists of his era. He has received numerous awards, including the New York Nightlife Award for "Outstanding Jazz Vocalist" (which he won three times), the Backstage Bistro Award for "Ongoing Achievement in Jazz," the Harlem Speaks "Jazz Museum of Harlem Award," and the DownBeat Critic's Poll Award for "Rising Star Vocalist."
He is performing at SummerStage 2016 as part of the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival, a celebration of the Centennial anniversary of Jazz. We caught up with him to talk about the illustrious Jazz genre, his career, Harlem upbringing, working with Grammy
