Emmys Nominations 2022
By Intern Blogger Yasmeen S. Davis
Ah, the Emmys! Where celebratory awards are given specifically to well-deserved actors, actresses, hosts and filmmakers alike for being involved with the production of television shows. Even if one doesn’t partake in such festivities– be it watching or attending them–most people in America know how it goes. The heartbreak seeing your favorites be pushed to the wayside by figures you’ve never heard of! The passionate words of first time winners–genuine in their shock; the recurring casts of prominent features idling before they put on their best “Oh wow?! For me (again)?” spiel. Though I don’t particularly care for the Emmys, there is a show I love that generally accumulates nominations from various award shows.
Stranger Things made its big debut with season 4 arriving to Netflix in late May of 2022. It’d been nearly THREE YEARS since season 3 in July 2019. So expectedly, there was a lot to unravel! Each episode (nine total) was chock full of content more than an hour long. The season even had to be split into two parts. The very last episode was a whopping 2 hours and 30 minutes runtime, and let me tell you, it was an engaging experience. For those who aren’t familiar with the series: Stranger Things is set in the 80’s and revolves around a young girl with supernatural powers who gradually develops friendships with courageous boys and girls. They fight alongside each other to uncover the dangerous unknown that threatens their families and hometown of Hawkins, Indiana. This show has plot heavy references to Dungeons and Dragons; a tabletop roleplaying game where adventurers (the players) gain experience points over time as they explore a world conjured by a dungeon master. Players use dice to accomplish tasks and defeat monsters. A dungeon master is essentially a narrative conductor. They start the story that adventurers continue and pave the way for them to make choices and fight enemies based on the rules of the playbook being used. It is still played by many today. In fact, characters in the show have strong ties to the game. Let’s just say some foe from D&D lore rear their heads in real life! This causes the kids much of their troubles and confusion as such happenings are: quite strange.
**SPOILER ALERT***
Enter Jamie Campbell Bower known for playing peculiar, villainous and bad boy roles in films like the Twilight Saga, Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and Sweeney Todd. When I first saw him in Stranger Things, I was so surprised and hyped up! Seeing him in other feature films, I was happy to see him aligning with Eleven in flashbacks as One/Henry, looking out for her, trying to keep her safe. He made her feel as if they were the same, and “Papa” was the enemy. Seeing as Papa had neglected Eleven’s feelings numerous times, I sided with One and believed him to be the light in Eleven’s past. Bower has always had a strange air to him, but interestingly enough, I did not see the signs of him having the deeper, ulterior motives to come. The ability as a performer to evolve (or should we say morally devolve) into Vecna and sway the audience to believe otherwise was beautiful. Not only did Bower move viewers globally, other actors like newcomer Joseph Quinn (Eddie Munson) and seasoned cast member Sadie Sink (Max Mayfield) had grand performances as well; of which contributed to a horde of emotional tweets and pop and metal hits from ‘85-86 topping the charts in 2022. It’s mind boggling that there isn’t a direct spotlight on specific performances. In addition to the surprising details, in the past there have been Emmy nominations for David Harbour (Jim Hopper) and Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven) yet zero wins. There are only 7 Emmy awards that have been won by Stranger Things. One out of the six does highlight the general cast with “Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series” though this was in 2017. This is another nomination for 2022, and it is unclear if it’ll become a win alongside other shows like “Euphoria” featuring beloved actor/singer Zendaya. It is a breath of fresh air, however, that Stranger Things’ behind the scenes cast (directors, editors, artists and stylists) are nominated year after year. It is still possible for the show to win for casting and share a collective round of applause for everyone who made season 4 so amazing. The interesting bit is that the nominations this year are ONLY for the first half of season 4 excluding the final two episodes. So there could be hope for more nominations in 2023 for the second half which held even more shock and incredible acting to carry it all home.
Here are all of the nominations for this year: Outstanding Production Design For A Narrative Period Or Fantasy Program (One Hour Or More), Outstanding Casting For A Drama Series, Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing For A Drama Series, Outstanding Period And/Or Character Hairstyling, Outstanding Period And/Or Character Makeup (Non-Prosthetic), Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup, Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Sound Editing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (One Hour), Outstanding Sound Mixing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (One Hour), Outstanding Special Visual Effects In A Season Or A Movie, Outstanding Stunt Performance, Outstanding Music Supervision, Outstanding Stunt Coordination For A Drama Series, Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie
